Porches, Decks and Other Outdoor Living Spaces Explained

Written by P.J. Sullivan | Feb 6, 2020 9:21:11 AM

Make the most of your outdoor space by turning them into outdoor living spaces. One of the top deck and roofing replacement companies in New York and New Jersey explains the different types of outdoor spaces for your home.

Deck

A deck is an open outdoor space that is typically made of lumber and often attached to the home. Some people may build a pergola or put a canopy on their deck to control the amount of sunlight. Decks are usually elevated from the ground. Decks that are 30 inches or more from the ground must have guard railings to prevent accidents and meet the building code requirements.

Most decks are located at the back of the house and lead to the back door. However, some homeowners choose to have a deck built in front.

Porch

According to deck and siding contractors, a porch is a covered structure that leads to the home’s entrance. It may be enclosed by half walls, rails, or columns. Some porches may be screened to keep insects out.  Most of the time, a porch is positioned at the same level as the main floor of the house. A porch is a great spot for relaxing, having coffee, or chatting with your family or friends.

Lanai

A lanai is a type of porch that is usually made of stone or concrete floor. It typically opens up to a patio or backyard.
