It’s not uncommon for homeowners to overlook tiny details, such as the window trim. After all, minor details like these aren’t that visible. But don’t forget that just one mismatched element can affect your home’s curb appeal. To help you choose the right exterior window trim, PJ Sullivan Exteriors, one of the top door replacement companies in the state, listed several design tips below.

Stick to Tried-and-Tested Combinations

Certain architectural styles are usually paired with certain trims. To give you an overview, we’ve listed some of the common architectural styles and their corresponding window trims:

  1. Ranch homes – A simple window trim, like a picture-frame trim, works well with this kind of architectural style.

  2. Craftsman and Prairie-style homes – These architectural styles are known for their wide window trims.

  3. Victorian, Colonial, Provencal and English cottage-style homes – Ornate window trims wouldn’t be out of place in these homes.

Contrast or Blend In?

Decide if you want your window trim to contrast or blend in with your exterior. For example, if you have a brick exterior and you want the trim to blend in with the rest of your home’s facade, choose a trim that matches the lightest or darkest brick color. As for other types of siding, choose a color one or two shades from the dominant color of your exterior, if you want the trim to blend in. If you want a bit more contrast, chose a trim that’s white, black, dark brown or dark gray.

General Color-Coordinating Rules

Coordinating colors can be tricky, however, so it’s a good idea to familiarize yourself with the general rules for coordinating colors on your exterior. We’ve listed the essential rules below:

  1. Your windows and door frames should be painted with the dominant color of your exterior.

  2. Windows and shutters should be in darker shades to make them look like they’re receding into your facade.

  3. Storm windows should have the same color as the window sash.
